In a significant development today, the Meghalaya Government engaged in discussions with the Harijan Panchayat Committee (HPC) in Shillong regarding the proposed relocation plan. The state government had earlier presented a plan on September 29, suggesting the relocation of 342 families from a disputed area to land owned by the Shillong Municipal Board. However, the families insisted that the government also construct houses for them.

Addressing the media persons, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tyngsong expressed optimism, stating, “We had a positive meeting; however, we have given them one more round of discussions among themselves. We have fixed a timeline, and by the second week of January, we aim to meet again and finalize everything.”

Emphasizing the need for unanimous decisions, Tyngsong added, “The decision should be for everybody, be it from the government side or their side.”

Discussing the proposed blueprint, Tyngsong outlined, “The blueprint covers the same area, but we have additional land. We presented an area of 2.14 acres within the existing building of the municipal board. Additionally, we have included another 1.4 acres of land opposite the existing one, bringing the total to 3.6 acres.”

General Secretary of Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee, Jagdeep Singh, shared insights into the meeting, saying, “We have discussed the issues in detail. While Meghalaya government is working in a positive direction and we are satisfied to some extent, there are still some unresolved issues that need to be addressed.”

HPC Chairman Gurjeet Singh provided further clarity, stating, “The presented blueprint is okay, but nothing has been finalized yet. Some five issues are still not resolved.”

This meeting assumes big significance as the Government aims to resolve the issue at the earliest.
