Eminent tribal musician, Thanga Darlong, the last practitioner of Tripura’s indigenous musical instrument ‘Rosem,’ passed away on Sunday at the age of 103.
Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha expressed deep sorrow over Darlong’s passing, acknowledging the irreplaceable void left in the state’s cultural realm.
Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Tinku Roy, accompanied by former MLA Musharraf Ali, visited the musician’s ancestral village to pay their respects, recognizing him as the ‘pied piper of Tripura.’
Speaking to Northeast Live, Tinku Roy said, ” We are sad with the demise of an eminent musician, we extend our grief”.
Thanga Darlong was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2019 for his outstanding contribution to flute-based music. He was the true custodian of the Rosem tradition.
Born in 1920, he received initial training from his father and later refined his skills under music maestro Darthuama Darlong. Throughout his life, Thanga Darlong not only enriched traditional festivals with his performances but also mentored aspiring musicians in the art of playing the Rosem. His global footprint included performances in Japan, contributing to the preservation of indigenous music.
