Tripura: 3 of a family including handicapped daughter commit suicide due to poverty

In a tragic incident reported from Thakurpara in Sonamura subdivision in Sepahijala district of Tripura, three of a family – father, mother and their handicapped daughter died by suicide today.

The deceased have been identified as Chintaharan Pal (father), Pratima Pal (mother) and their daughter Monika Pal, a college student. The bodies were found lying on a bed in their house.

The family earned their living by supplying materials for mid-day meals to a nearby school and did some idol making work.

The reason behind them taking the extreme step is still not known, but people close to the family said that they were going through abject poverty facing a lot of financial stress and the daughter’s health condition had taken a turn for the worse.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Sepahijala district, BJ Reddy said that preliminary findings suggest that all the three members consumed poison.
