CM Khandu stressed the need to raise awareness and motivate medical students to opt for PG courses in anatomy
Amid medical students’ reluctance to opt for post graduation courses in anatomy, Chief Minister Pema Khandu of Arunachal Pradesh urged medical students and professionals to consider pursuing postgraduate courses in anatomy.
The Chief Minister was speaking at the inaugural function of the 70th National Conference (NATCON’70) and International Colloquium organized by TRIHMS under the banner of Anatomical Society of India (ASI).
Highlighting the indispensable role of anatomy in medical science, Chief Minister Khandu emphasized that “Without anatomy, medical science is incomplete.” He stressed the need to raise awareness and motivate medical students to opt for postgraduate courses in anatomy to ensure a steady supply of specialists in the field for the health service.
Addressing the scarcity of bodies available for anatomy classes at TRIHMS, the state’s sole medical college, Khandu advocated for creating awareness about the donation of bodies for medical education after death.
He noted that educating the tribal population, constituting 100% of the state, about the significant contribution they could make to medical education and research through body donation was crucial.
Expressing gratitude to the Anatomical Society of India for choosing Arunachal Pradesh as the host for NATCON’70, Chief Minister Khandu showcased the state government’s commitment to advancing medical knowledge and research.
He highlighted the historical significance of the event, being only the second time in 70 years that ASI held NATCON in the North East and the first time in Arunachal Pradesh.
Khandu also highlighted the potential benefits for faculty and students at TRIHMS, providing them with opportunities to interact with national and international figures in the field.
With over 350 faculty delegates from India and abroad participating in the four-day conference, Khandu identified key areas of focus, including the ‘Technique of Plastination and Body Preservation,’ ‘Gene Technology,’ and ‘Digital learning and training in Anatomy and allied sciences.’
The conference, hosted by the Department of Anatomy at TRIHMS, features the organizing chairman, Prof. Dr Naba Bezbaruah. More than 100 scientific papers are slated for presentation during the event, which also includes an International Colloquium. Delegates from ten countries, including the USA, Denmark, Australia, Russia, South Korea, North Korea, Malaysia, West Indies, Oman, and the UAE, are participating.
State Health Minister Alo Libang was also present at the inaugural ceremony.
