TMC leader and Former Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has rubbished all rumours of him joining the BJP.

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, the TMC leader said that the narrative of him joining another party had also come up right after the general election this year. Mukul added that he is taking a relaxed approach for now, before focusing on the 2028 assembly polls.

“No, I am not joining BJP. I am aware of the fact that the narrative circulated by media reports. This is nothing new. This has been there immediately after the results for the 2023 state assembly election was out. We have a long way to go until the next assembly election in 2028. The present government has been just there just for few months and therefore it’s only appropriate for me to enjoy the luxury of this initial part of this term to rejuvenate myself physically, spiritually and, politically,” said Mukul Sangma.

Speaking about joining any political other party, he said that he will take a call only before 2028 assembly elections.

“The level of support that was shown during the 2023 assembly election gradually came towards us (TMC), even though we were unable to secure enough votes. Building a political party is difficult and there is no shortcut, so we will continue to build this political party. Let’s see what happens as the political situation unfolds over time and we will take a call shortly before 2028,” he added.

Speaking on the speculations about him meeting a few BJP leaders in Delhi recently, Sangma said, “It is very natural for a political leader to meet other political leaders. However, I did not have time after the general election in 2023 to meet any political leaders. I have only had met with BJP leaders in 2019 and 2022. Currenlty, I am enjoying my peace.”

Earlier, sources in the BJP said that a top political leader and at least two of his followers, all of them MLAs, are set to join BJP after December 3.

These leaders, according to the BJP, have been camping in Delhi in a bid to finalise the move of changing parties.
