In a big decision that might hit the supply of petrol and diesel in Meghalaya, the North East Petroleum Mazdoor Union on Monday said that the drivers of oil tankers being run by the Union would strike work from November 29 alleging harassment by Meghalaya Police.
In a statement, the Union has levelled serious allegations against the Meghalaya Police accusing it of harassing oil tanker drivers and helpers and accusing them of malpractices. The Union said “since November 24, the Meghalaya Police have been torturing oil tanker drivers and their helpers in the name of malpractices in Ri-Bhoi district”.
The Union has written a letter to Meghalaya Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister C Ymbon seeking assurance from him that such harassment from the Police is stopped immediately and the drivers and helpers are able to work in peace and without fear. The Union has said that their strike would continue till the matter is resolved. In case the strike continues for long, supply of fuel to Meghalaya is likely to get hit.
