Manipur: Displaced MBBS, BDS students barred from taking exams

First Published: 21st November, 2023 20:01 IST

The displaced students have sought urgent transfer to institutes outside Manipur and sought intervention of the Manipur Governor to expedite the process.

At least 27 MBBS and 2 BDS students, who were displaced because of the unrest in the state were barred from taking the exams despite depositing exam fees and completing the necessary procedure for the exams, following which they took to the streets in Manipur’s Churachandpur district today demanding immediate transfer to medical colleges outside Manipur.

They have sought Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey’s urgent intervention to expedite the process. The displaced students belong to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) and Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS).

A meeting was held between the Directors and Deans of Medical Colleges under Manipur University on October 20, wherein it was decided to seek approval of the National Medical Commission (NMC) for any alternative arrangement and possible modalities for conducting examination of the displaced students.

The displaced students soon began preparing for their respective examinations and completed formalities such as filling up exam forms, necessary procedures for getting Admit Cards, depositing exam fees after the NMC on November 13, according to the displaced students, had clearly stated that it had no objection if displaced students appeared in the university examination either from parent college or from a different college. After this, the displaced students were attending classes at the Churachandpur Medical College (CMC).

However, the displaced students in a memorandum to Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey have alleged that they were barred from appearing in examinations scheduled to be held on November 14 and November 21.

On November 18, the students were informed that admit cards and other examination materials were for the 6 MBBS students only who were pursuing their studies at the CMC. The unhappy students who are worried about their future, have blamed the Manipur University for what had happened.

The memorandum said, “We would therefore, like to know on what ground our 6 fellow students from CMC are allowed to write their exam and we are denied the same when all of us have been having the same classes and same training under one roof? Why Manipur University is not allowing us to write the university exam even after getting NOC from NMC?”
