The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has now demanded the implementation of an NRC-like exercise in the hill state with 1971 as the cut off year to flush out illegal migrants.
In a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, the KSU argued that the population of Meghalaya has witnessed a substantial growth of 27.95 percent from 2001 to 2011 which is way above the national average and the union suspects that the high population growth can be attributed to unabated influx into the state.
The KSU said an NRC like exercise is the need of the hour to save Meghalaya from becoming another Tripura or Assam where the indigenous communities are turning into minorities.
