A mob gathered in front of the Zokhawthar police station in Mizoram to protest the atrocities committed by the junta in neighbouring Myanmar

Amid the bombing and intense gun battle between the Myanmar Army and pro-democracy militias in Chin State of Myanmar across India’s border with the neighbouring country, a mob gathered in front of the Zokhawthar Police station in Champhai district of Mizoram, where at least 39 personnel of the Myanmar Army had surrendered with their weapons and all their military gears.

This comes after the massive battle in Myanmar’s Khawmawi, which is just across Zokhawthar village on the Indian side of the border between the Myanmar army and the People’s Defense Forces which is the armed wing of Myanmar’s National Unity Government.

Zokhawthar, a now-closed border trade point, is about 205 km southeast of Mizoram’s capital Aizawl.

The mob had gathered in front of the Zokhawthar police station to protest against the atrocities committed by the junta during the ongoing crisis in the neighbouring country.

Moreover, fresh fighting in Myanmar has once again triggered the flow of refugees into Mizoram. So alarming is the situation that around 5000 refugees have crossed over to Zokhawthar village in the last 48 hours.

Among those who have crossed over are 20 injured people who were rushed to the district hospital Champhai. Eight of them have been taken to Aizawl for further treatment.

As per sources, the Assam Rifles has deployed additional columns along the Myanmar border in the wake of the situation.

The fresh influx comes after Myanmar Army bombed People’s Democratic Front bases at Khawmawi town in the Chin state of Myanmar on Sunday.

As per reports, Myanmar Army jets dropped 2 rounds of bombs at a village in Khawmawi, which is just across Zokhawthar village.

The Assam Rifles is closely monitoring the situation.
