Meghalaya: Jowai and Tura Civil Hospitals short of doctors, nurses

Meghalaya government today evaluated the performance of the state-run hospitals and held a thorough discussion on how to further improve the services

Most of the state-run civil hospitals in Meghalaya are struggling due to a severe shortage of manpower, including doctors and nurses and medical staff. This was revealed, when Chief Minister Conrad Sangma reviewed the positions, requirements of infrastructure and indexes of a few hospitals for evaluation of their performances, said Health Minister Dr Ampareen Lyngdoh.

In an effort to strengthen the state’s healthcare system, the Meghalaya government today evaluated the performance of the state-run hospitals and held a thorough discussion on how to further improve the services.

CM Conrad Sangma has recently visited Jowai Civil Hospital and Tura Civil Hospital to review their performance and their requirements, when he was informed about shortfall of nurses, para medical staffs, specialist, doctors etc. Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh told reporters.

Minister Lyngdoh said that the review meeting was held with the purpose to ensure that the government are able to track the performance of all the hospitals and to see how best the government can strengthen the state’s healthcare system.

She said that after reviewing a few hospitals, the State government has decided that the most critical requirement in the hospitals are human resources.

Minister Lyngdoh said, “We are also a little concerned by the fact that all government hospitals in the state often refer patients to more advanced facilities, we will investigate this and make significant investments to make all advanced facilities required.”

“We will await for another interactive session with CM Conrad Sangma to see what are the other areas and what are the financial inputs that government will be taking to ensure that our health system improves substantially,” she said.

She also said that given that many health professionals in the state are working in far flung areas, the State government is also considering to providing incentives to them.
