Priyam Deka from Assam has brought laurels to the state and the country by becoming the only candidate to crack the United Kingdom Civil Service this year and qualify for the post of Policy Advisor at the Department for Transport in UK.
On achieving the milestone, she said, “I am happy that I have been selected as a United Kingdom Civil Servant. To get this position was highly competitive with an acceptance rate of less than 1%. Three years ago as a student at University College London, holed up in my tiny apartment -feeling lost and frankly quite homesick. I never thought that I would one day be selected for the UK Civil Service as a Policy Advisor.”
“I hope to be able to make my parents and the Assamese community proud through my work in the UK government. I have only been able to achieve this milestone because of the selfless and consistent sacrifices made by my parents, the support from my family members and the most uplifting and supportive Assamese community,” said Deka.
She said that she is incredibly proud to represent India and give a voice to Indians in the UK and worldwide.
She will be working under Minister Mark Harper – Cabinet Secretary of Transport. Priyam Deka’s responsibilities as a bureaucrat include helping government contracts, advising ministers, conducting policy analyses, and offering direct assistance to those utilizing public services.
United Kingdom Civil Service in the royal government in United Kingdom is equivalent to the Union Public Service Commission’s Civil Service exams held for Indian Administrative Service.
The selection process spanned over a year with more than 5 examinations /assessment rounds culminating in a rigorous final assessment day (9 hour examinations). The exam consisted of numerical, verbal and logical reasoning assessments as well as policy challenges and multiple interview rounds with senior officials in the Civil Service, she said.
