Fmr Assam minister and veteran Cong leader Sarat Barkotoky dies at 88

The former Assam education and PWD minister was undergoing treatment at the GMCH since October 16. His condition suddenly took a turn for the worse last evening

Veteran Congress leader and former Assam minister Sarat Barkotoky passed away today at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH). He was 88.

The former Assam education and PWD minister passed away at 1:36 AM at the GMCH where he was undergoing treatment since October 16. His condition suddenly took a turn for the worse last evening and the veteran Congressman breathed his last past midnight.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condoled the death of Barkotoky and in a post in X he wrote, “I am saddened to hear of the passing away of senior politician, former Minister of Government of Assam, Mr. Sharat Barkatki He is a skilled politician and a man of clean personality. I learned many things from him as a colleague for many years His death is a great loss to the political scene of Assam.

I pray to God for the eternal peace of the veteran politician and extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved families The funeral will be held with full state dignity Om Shanti 🙏”

Sarat Barkotoky was born in 1935 in Mathurapur, Sonari. He represented the Congress in the Assam Assembly from Sonari constituency five times. He won the Sonari seat in 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006 and 2011. He lost the seat in the 2016 Assembly elections.

He was a Minister in the Cabinet of Chief Minister late Hiteshwar Saikia and later became the PWD minister in the cabinet of Chief Minister late Tarun Gogoi in 2001, and Education Minister in 2015.
