Chief Minister N Biren Singh has also assured to look into other issues such as proper drinking water supply, road connectivity to Imphal among others

Ukhrul town will soon become the summer capital of Manipur. Chief Minister N Biren Singh has informed about this after he chaired a cabinet meeting in Ukhrul- the first such meeting to have been conducted in a hill district since the unrest began on May 3.

After the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister N Biren Singh stated that his government has taken necessary initiatives to make Ukhrul town as the summer capital of the state. In fact, civil society organisations in Ukhrul met the Chief Minister and handed over him a charter of 15 demands, among which the key demand is to make Ukhrul the summer capital.

Affirming that development and welfare are the key agendas of his government, N Biren Singh accepted the demands put forth by the CSOs. After going through the set of demands the Chief Minister informed the civil society organisations that most of the demands are already under the purview of his government. The key demands include addressing the issue of drinking water problem, road connecitivity with Imphal among others.

Apparently, what can be termed as a beginning of this, the Manipur Chief Minister coinciding with the cabinet meeting inaugurated key development projects while laying base for several others.

Sharing his plans for development in Ukhrul, N Biren Singh proposed for setting up a New Ukhrul, expressing his view that the present town is too congested.

However, he sought cooperation and insisted that people should not create problems especially in terms of land acquilisition for giving shape to such development projects. In this context, the Chief Minister mentioned that the ongoing construction of the 2-lane Imphal-Ukhrul road has been delayed owing to issues arising out of land acquisition.

N Biren Singh also said that his government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is looking into every aspect for the setting up of a medical college in the Ukhrul district.

He said, “Though the requirement for the establishment of a medical college is to have a 200-bed hospital, the recent statement by Modi ji has given me the impetus to make the dream of Ukhrul people of having a medical college in the district a reality.”
