The Meghalaya government imposed a 15 day ban on the import and sale of fish from outside the state after laboratory tests detected traces of formalin in some imported fish.
Speaking on the ban, chief minister Conrad Sangma said the ban has been imposed as the health and well being of the people of the state is important.
He further said that it will be wrong on the part of the government to let the people consume fish, despite knowing that its formalin treated.
Conrad also added that it will also be an opportunity for the local people to produce more fish in the state itself and in the process allow the local industry to grow.
