Meghalaya: Elephant gets high on local liquor in North Garo Hills, leaves 2 grievously injured

In a rather interesting and rare incident, a wild elephant drank brew made by locals, got intoxicated, lost control, and went on the rampage seriously injuring two persons in Meghalaya’s North Garo Hills.
The incident took place on Sunday evening at Khaldang village, located in Resubelpara C.D.Block of North Garo Hills district.
According to forest officials, the elephant strayed out of forest to the Khaldang village area and was heading towards Assam by crossing the border.
The elephant smelled the brew being made by the locals there. Drawn by the aroma, the elephant proceeded to where the brew was being made, and apparently drank the brew, became intoxicated, lost control, and went on the rampage.
The wild elephant attacked houses in the Khaldang village, smashing a couple of them while also injuring a few locals who were trying to stop the damage.
During the attack, a woman from Meghalaya and a man from Assam sustained serious injuries.
The injured man from Assam has been rushed to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) owing to the extent of his injuries. He is currently undergoing treatment. While, the woman was shifted to Resubelpara CHC where she is undergoing treatment and is said to be out of danger,” informed deputy commissioner of NGH, K Mitali Chandra.
