The official administration said that the death toll from the earthquake in Herat is higher than originally reported.

A powerful magnitude-6.3 earthquake followed by strong aftershocks killed over 2,000 people and injured more than 9,000, in western Afghanistan, a Taliban administration said on Sunday.

Saturday’s tremor is one of the deadliest earthquakes to strike the country in two decades.

The official administration said that the death toll from the earthquake in Herat is higher than originally reported.

At least six villages have been destroyed, and hundreds of civilians have been buried under the debris.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a series of earthquakes striking the region.

According to USGS, seven earthquakes have been recorded, with notable magnitudes including a 5.9 earthquake located 35 kilometers (21.7 miles) north-northwest of Herat.

Additionally, two significant 6.3 magnitude earthquakes were detected, one situated 33 kilometers (20.5 miles) north-northeast of Zindah Jan, and another 29 kilometers (18 miles) north-northeast of Zindah Jan, approximately 43 kilometers (26 miles) west of Herat city. The seismic activity has raised concerns among local residents and prompted further monitoring by geological experts.

Earlier, the World Health Organization (WHO) said more than 600 houses were destroyed or partially damaged across at least 12 villages in Herat province, with some 4,200 people affected.
