The Kamrup Metropolitan District Administration has issued a helpline number, 93654 29314, to help the people trapped in the artificial flood

As Guwahati is reeling under artificial floods triggered by torrential rains that the city has witnessed in the past few days, several educational institutes in the city have announced closure, while many have postponed the semester or half-yearly examinations.

Following the heavy downpour, several parts of the city have witnessed neck-deep water. The most affected areas due to the floods include Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Zoo Road, Rajgarh Area, Rukminigaon, Narengi IOCL, Ulubari, Gandhi Basti, Borbari, Hatigaon, and RG Baruah Road.

SDRF boats were seen out on the flooded streets of Guwahati ferrying people. Guwahati residents in some areas were seen leaving their homes as rain triggered flood water entered their homes making living in the homes impossible.

The Kamrup Metropolitan District Administration has issued a helpline number, 93654 29314, to help those trapped in the artificial flood.

Due to floods, people are also facing shortage of drinking water and are spending nights in the dark due to no electricity.

Meanwhile, the local councillor of Anil Nagar informed that they have asked the administration to arrange drinking water and candles for people.

Minister for Housing, Urban Affairs, and Irrigation, Ashok Singhal, said that the current flood situation in the city is significantly better than the previous year.

“In comparison to last year, the issue of artificial flooding has significantly improved in Guwahati. There is waterlogging in many areas, but it is draining quickly, unlike earlier. Moreover, areas such as Anil Nagar and Nabin Nagar are the most flood-prone areas in the city,” Singhal said.

At least 32 pumps are being used to pump out the flood water, the Minister said. The Minister also mentioned that throwing of garbage in darins of the city has further compounded the situation.

Meanwhile, the Met Department has issued red alert for Assam and Meghalaya meaning more rains will lash Guwahati and other parts of Assam and the adjoining state of Meghalaya.
