Four years after a minor girl was raped and murdered in Tripura’s Dharmanagar, Special Judge, Anshuman Debbarma granted death sentence to the two convicts at a hearing of the case on Thursday.

The convicts, Dibakar Das from Dharmanagar and Sourabh Chandra Nath from Kanchanpur, had committed the crime in June 2019.

A case was filed at the Dharmanagar Women’s police station in June 2019 based on a written complaint by the victim’s mother, reporting that her minor daughter was missing. Tragically, the young girl’s lifeless body was recovered on June 18, 2019 at the Haflong Tea Estate.

The investigation was diligently conducted by Women Sub-Inspector Sanchita Nath from Dharmanagar Women PS.

Following a thorough inquiry, the Investigating Officer (IO) filed the charge sheet on November 28, 2019, under sections 363/376 DB/302/201 IPC and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act against the accused individuals, Dibakar Das and Sourabh Chandra Nath, who were to stand trial in an open court of law.

Both accused were apprehended, and during interrogation, they confessed to the heinous crime of raping and murdering the girl.

Forensic examinations further corroborated their involvement, as semen samples were found in the victim’s clothing.

The Special Judge has passed the death penalty and a fine of Rs. 5,000, with an additional six-month imprisonment in case of non-payment.
