Mizoram Cong MLA resigns, to join MNF, contest upcoming polls on MNF ticket

K.T. Rokhaw, one of the 5 Congress legislators of Mizoram, submitted his resignation as MLA to Assembly Speaker Lalrinliana Sailo on Tuesday.
Rokhaw (58) resigned as MLA after a decision was taken by the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) to nominate him to contest the coming election to the 40-member state legislature from his home turf – Palak seat.
His name will be officially announced when the MNF announces the names of all its 40 candidates at a function on Wednesday, the day when Chief Minister Zoramthanga, who is also president of the party, will officially kick off the poll campaign in Aizawl.
After submitting his resignation, he told media persons that he consulted a number of people within his constituency before taking the final decision to join the MNF and to contest in the ticket of the regional party.
Rokhaw, who used to be personal assistant to then Assembly Speaker Hiphei during the latter’s first stint to preside over the state legislature from January 30, 1989 to July 14, 1990, joined politics and successfully contested from Palak seat (then known as Tupang constituency) in 1993 state assembly polls as an independent candidate supported by the MNF.
Rokhaw, then changed his allegiance from the MNF to the then ruling Congress party along with 5 MNF legislators from southern part of the state. He again won the assembly elections from the same constituency as Congress candidte in 1998, but was in the opposition bench with the MNF winning the polls that year. He again won from Palak seat for the third time in 2018 in a Congress ticket.
