Meghalaya cabinet ministers join protest in Delhi demanding inclusion of Khasi language in 8th Schedule of the Constitution

The protest was attended by cabinet minister, Ampareen Lyngdoh, Paul Lyngdoh, former Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh, Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Chairman Lam-phrang Blah and others.

Meghalaya cabinet ministers Ampareen Lyngdoh, Paul Lyngdoh, former Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh, Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Chairman Lam-phrang Blah, opposition leader Titos Chyne were among those who joined a protest in Delhi demanding inclusion of Khasi language in 8th Schedule of the Constitution.

It was a mega protest as former MLAs, leaders of Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Federation of Khasi Jaintia & Garo people (FKJGP), Ri Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF), Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) , Jaintia Student’ Union (JSU), and others also joined the protest.

The protest was organised by the Khasi Author’s Society (KAS) on Saturday.

Addressing the media, members of the KAS said that the demand for the inclusion of Khasi language in the 8th Schedule is a long standing demand of the Khasis spanning over 40 years and to give more gravitas to the demand the KAS has taken the demands to the national capital.

KAS also resolved to urge the Government of India through the Ministry of Home Affairs to initiate necessary steps in order to introduce an official bill in the Parliament for inclusion of Khasi language in the Constitution.
