The police learned that these imposters extorted money from one civilian on September 25 after threatening to arrest her if she didn't pay a certain amount of money

Three persons, a couple and a woman, who extorted money from a civilian posing as Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials were arrested by Champhai police near the Myanmar border in Mizoram on Thursday.

The State Police officials posted at the Mizoram-Myanmar border in Champhai district received complaints that some identified miscreants posing as DRI officials had visited the Khankawn police check gate on September 18 on the pretext of checking the movement of vehicles.

The police also learned that these imposters extorted money from one civilian on September 25 after threatening to arrest her if she didn’t pay a certain amount of money.

Accordingly, the police conducted a swift investigation and arrested the three imposters on Thursday morning, identified as Laltharzeli, a resident of New Champhai, P. B. Rozamliani, and her husband, Johny Lalthlamuana, residents of Kahrawt, Champhai.

The police also seized two fake DRI ID cards from their possession.

A case under Section 468/385/419/170/34 IPC was registered at the Champhai Police Station.

The Khankawn check gate is located at a strategic location on National Highway 6, which connects Champhai with the state capital, Aizawl, approximately 30 kilometres from the Indo-Myanmar border.

Surrounded by forests on both sides, it falls under the jurisdiction of the Champhai police station.
As this place is not very far from the Myanmar border, smugglers, drug traffickers, and gun runners always try to take this route. It is a hotspot to transport smuggled drugs, and most of the smuggled drugs and other contraband, including exotic animals, were recovered.
