The transport department should issue strict instructions saying people without proper parking facility should not be allowed to buy cars, minister AL Hek said
Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya and a popular tourists destination has a big traffic problem and to it is the unauthorised parking on the roads. Instead of finding a proper solution to this, Meghalaya Minister AL Hek has suggested that the Transport Department comes up with strict clear instructions saying people without proper dedicated parking space should not be allowed to buy cars.
“Everybody do not have to buy a car if they do not have a parking facility at home,” Minister Hek said when asked about the problem of unauthorised parking on the streets of Shillong leading to traffic jams.
The minister went on to say, “The transport department now has to issue very strict instructions. Anybody buying a car without identified parking should not be allowed to do so unless they have a permanent parking arrangement of their own.”
The government is also exploring solutions to alleviate parking congestion in Shillong. Hek mentioned about the government’s plans for multiple parking spaces with different layers to address the parking challenges faced by the city’s residents.
