Kumar scaled the Mt Everest in 2013 and 2019
From being a capable public servant to an adventure enthusiast, the journey has been incredible for Ravindra Kumar. Very few know about Kumar, an IAS Officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, who has been able to pursue his ambition with great success.
Despite shouldering the huge responsibility of an IAS officer, Ravindra Kumar is the only administrative officer to have scaled the world’s tallest mountain peak Mount Everest twice. Presently serving as the District Magistrate of Jhansi, Kumar successfully reached the summit of Mt Everest twice in three attempts. He is also one of the few Indians to have scaled the peak from both Nepal and China, in 2013 and 2019 respectively.
Speaking to news agency ANI, Kumar said, “I have attempted Mt Everest 3 times but successful summit was 2 times. In 2013 I climbed from the Nepal side, in 2015 I made the second attempt but because of Nepal earthquake the attempt was averted. All the expeditions were cancelled and we had to come back. 2019 was the third attempt from the China side. I was successful and could reach the top.”
“As per data issued by Nepal there are only 14 mountaineers from India who have climbed Mt Everest from both sides- China and Nepal. I am one of them,” Ravindra Kumar said.
But, Kumar scaled the Mt Everest not only to realise his dream but also with a different purpose. The Jhansi District Magistrate had the noble idea of spreading the message of ‘Water Conservation’ from the top of the highest mountain peak in the world.
Sharing his thoughts, Ravindra Kumar said, “When you do something with your heart it carries over a long period of time. I carried Gangajal (Holy water of the Ganga) to the peak of Everest and made appeal to people for water conservation. So when I returned and I was on the field as SDM of Bulandshar and District Magistrate of Jhansi, I continued with that zeal of water conservation.
I worked on the conservation of the Nim Nadi in Bulandshahr, further I carried out rejuvenation of River Kaneira, river Lakheri, Sukhnoi, Chej river.”
A testimony of sheer grit and determination, IAS officer Ravindra Kumar who has championed the cause of water conservation by climbing the Mt Everest certainly deserves appreciation and respect.
