After Ashish Rai who returned to the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) party on Tuesday recieved a grand welcome at the Party Office situated at Lal Bazar by his supporters in Arithang Constituency.
His supporters staged a rally from his residence to the party office.During the welcome programme, the supporters said that this time the party will not make any mistake and will support Rai fully in the upcoming 2024 elections.
They said that after Ashish Rai re-joined SDF, the party has turned more stronger and is likely to win the 2024 elections from Arithang.
In his speech, Ashish Rai urged everyone to work together for the upcoming elections and not just in the Arithang constituency but also to fully support the SDF to ensure its victory.
Talking to Northeast Live, Member of SDF, Sakun Gurung said that the party made a big mistake by not giving ticket to Ashish Rai in the 2019 elections to contest Arithang seat.
“Such mistakes will not be made in the upcoming 2024 elections and the victory of Ashish Rai will be the victory of the Party itself” she added.
Yesterday, former Sikkim Chief Minister and SDF chief Pawan Kumar Chamling termed Ashish Rai’s return as ‘homecoming’ and said that denying ticket to Ashish Rai in the 2019 elections cost SDF very dearly and it was a big mistake that the party would not repeat in 2024.
Ashish Rai, who was serving as the Gangtok Municipal Corporation Subject Committee Chairman, was seen as the most eligible candidate from Arithang constituency as SDF youth leader. But instead of him, the party gave the ticket to Shyam Pradhan as the Arithang candidate then, which saw wide spread protest from SDF and Ashish Rai’s supporters prior to elections in 2019.
Meanwhile, Ashish Rai in his address admitted to ‘homecoming’, but asserted, “Shame on you if you fool me once, shame on me if you fool me twice”.
Ashish Rai quit SDF party on March 25, 2019 to be an independent candidate from Arithang, and after 4 and a half years, he re-joined the party on Tuesday, September 19 at a mega joining programme held at the SDF headquarters in Gangtok.
