Women’s Reservation Bill likely to be passed in LS: Nation waits for historic moment

First Published: 19th September, 2023 9:32 IST

The Bill seeks to reserve 33% of all seats in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies for women

The nation is staring at a historic development as the Centre in all likelihood will be tabling Women’s Reservation Bill in the Parliament today. If passed one-third of seats in Parliament and state legislatures across the country will be reserved for women.

This will be indeed a significant step towards women empowernment in the nation where women constitute 50% of the total population.

On Monday the cabinet approved this after the decision was pushed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the union cabinet meeting.

What is the Women’s Reservation Bill?
The Women’s Reservation Bill is also called the The Constitution (One Hundred and Eighth Amendment) Bill. The Bill has already been passed in the Rajya Sabha but has not been tabled before the Lok Sabha yet. The Bill seeks to reserve 33% of all seats in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies for women.

The allocation of reserved seats shall be determined by an authority decided on by the Parliament.
Amid speculations that the women’s reservation bill may be tabled in Parliament, the Congress has welcomed the ‘move’ by the Centre.

“It’s been a long-standing demand of the Congress party to implement women’s reservation. We welcome the reported decision of the Union Cabinet and await the details of the Bill. This could have very well been discussed in the all-party meeting before the Special Session, and consensus could have been built instead of operating under a veil of secrecy,” Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh posted on X.

In May 2008, the Women’s Reservation Bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha and was referred to a standing committee. It was passed in the upper house in 2010 and then it was sent to Lok Sabha. However, it could not be passed and lapsed with the 15th Lok Sabha.
