Meghalaya celebrates 136th Unitarian Day: A unique movement

The 136th anniversary of Unitarian Day was celebrated at Unitarian church in Meghalaya’s Shillong on Monday by adherents of the faith.

Unitarianism is a unique movement in the realms of spiritualism which draws its theology largely from the indigenous Khasi religion.

The theme of this year’s programme is the ‘Religion are different Roads converging at the same point.’ This famous line said by Mahatma Gandhi.

On this occasion, the all faith leaders from different religious groups attended the program. Meanwhile, the chief guest on the occasion was the cabinet Minister Kyrmen Shylla, and local MLA of 19th South Shillong Sanbor Shullai.

Today morning, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has extended warm greetings to the Unitarians of Meghalaya as they celebrate the 136th Unitarian Day. This day holds special significance in Meghalaya, being the only state in India to observe it as a state holiday.

“Today we celebrate a unique spiritual occasion that has its roots in the Khasi region. On the 136th Unitarian Day, I extend my warm greetings to the Unitarians of Meghalaya. Wishing them a blessed Unitarian Day!” Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma on X.

The Unitarian Movement led by Hajom Kissor Singh is a socio-religious movement in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya which emerged at such a time.

Hajom Kissor established the Unitarian movement in Jowai, Jaintia Hills on the 18th September, 1887 which till date Khasi Unitarians celebrate as Foundation Day.

The impact of the movement spread rapidly all over the region and extended to a few parts of the neighbouring state of Assam.
