Nagaland DGP’s ‘last warning’ to cops involved in drug trafficking, alcohol and drug abuse

Any cop found consuming alcohol or drugs would not be spared, they would be sacked, DGP Rupin Sharma said
Director General of Police (DGP) of Nagaland, Rupin Sharma, has issued a strong warning to the state’s police personnel regarding their involvement in drug trafficking and indulging in drugs and alcohol.
In a stern warning the DGP said, “This is the last warning for those personnel involved in drug trafficking. Anyone found consuming drugs or alcohol will not be spared, their services would be terminated”.
He stated that no leniency would be shown to any police personnel at any level, and they would face “sukha” discharge, which means forced early retirement without benefits.
Sharma expressed concern about the rising issues of drug abuse and alcoholism among the police force. He mentioned that warnings were issued seven months ago, and there would be no more chances.
The DGP informed that a list of suspects involved in such activities had been shared with each police unit. He advised those struggling with alcohol or drug problems to seek rehabilitation on their own.
Regarding promotions, Sharma announced that all future promotions would be based on the Central Promotion Test (CPT) conducted by the Police Headquarters (PHQ).
Promotions based on other recommendations, including those from Ministers and legislators, would no longer be considered. Police personnel could choose to skip the CPT for one cycle and rejoin during the next.
Sharma mentioned that efforts were being made to improve rations for the police, with expected changes in the next 2-3 months. He urged personnel to report any problems or suggestions directly to the Circle officer and Superintendent of Police. If issues remained unresolved, they could visit the Police Headquarters (PHQ) without an appointment.
Nagaland Police took an anti-narcotics pledge on March 24, 2023, committing not to engage in the production, possession, sale, purchase, transportation, or consumption of psychotropic substances. Sharma highlighted that Nagaland Police might be the first in the country to administer such a pledge to its personnel.
During the event, Sharma stressed the need for education about the seriousness of drug abuse and requested officers struggling with addiction to come forward voluntarily for rehabilitation. He warned that those caught by the department would face suspension or termination from service.
