Change in climate is affecting water resources, agriculture, forests, environment and health

The Assam government admitted that climate change and global warming are causing noticeable effects in the state, impacting various aspects of life.

The Science, technology, and Climate Change Department minister, Keshab Mahanta said, “We can see the effects of global warming and climate change. Because of the increase in the average global temperatures, we are experiencing more hot summer days, and winters have become shorter. There are also irregular rainfall patterns and more extreme heat days happening in the state.”

This climate change is affecting many sectors, including water resources, agriculture, forests, environment, power, rural development, and health.

Unusual rain and unexpected floods are affecting both summer and winter paddy farming. Moreover, long periods of drought and higher temperatures are causing more pest issues in tea cultivation.
The lowering water levels in our water bodies are putting our local wildlife at risk, and groundwater levels are also going down.

Global warming is affecting people’s health, leading to more heat-related illnesses and the spread of diseases carried by insects like mosquitoes.

The climate change effects emphasize the need for ongoing efforts to deal with and adapt to these challenges.
