Arunachal Pradesh: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh dedicates strategic Nechiphu Tunnel to nation

First Published: 12th September, 2023 14:46 IST

The all weather tunnel has been constructed under Project Vartak by the BRO at an altitude of 5,600 feet.

A testament of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO)’s engineering prowess, the all strategic Nechiphu Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Kameng district was inaugurated today by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu was also present in the virtual inauguration by the Defence Minister.
On the occasion, Rajnath Singh said, “I had laid foundation for the Nechiphu Tunnel in Oct 2020 along the Balipara-Chariduar-Tawang Road. Not even 3 years, you (BRO) have completed the project. I am very happy because I could dedicate this to the nation today. There was a time when making roads in the border areas was difficult from the diplomatic, political and geographical point of view. But the BRO have made the most difficult tasks easy. Perfection has now become the habit of BRO.”
The all weather tunnel will be a boost to the nation’s military prowess, since it will cut short the distance for the troops to reach the border with China, the Line of Actual (LAC), by 6 kms and travel time by 20 minutes.
The structure is an unique 500-meter-long “D-shaped, single tube double lane tunnel” on the Balipara-Charduar-Tawang (BCT) Road in the West Kameng district.
On May 20, 2022 the BRO conducted the final “break through blast” to mark the successful completion of excavation work of the Nechiphu Tunnel. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on October 20, 2022 had laid the foundation for the Nechiphu Tunnel. The first blast to commence work on the tunnel was also triggered the same day.
Besides providing connectivity, the tunnel will reduce carbon footprint and will improve the ecology of this area.
The tunnel is being constructed under Project Vartak by the Border Roads Organisaiton (BRO) between km 82.00 and km 88.00 along Balipara-Chariduar-Tawang Road connecting Assam at an altitude of 5,600 feet.
The construction of the tunnel has been accomplished by cutting through fragile Himalayan mountains with highly fractured rock under low overburden.
Apart from the Nechiphu Tunnel, Rajnath Singh also inaugurated 8 roads under Vartak, Brahmank and Udayak Projects of the BRO. Besides, the Defence Minister also inaugurated 27 bridges under Project Udayak, Project Arunank, Project Vartak and Project Brahmank.
