Assam Cabinet urges Centre for complete withdrawal of AFSPA from Assam

In a significant development, the Assam State Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has recommended the withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), from the state.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the Cabinet’s decision during a briefing at the State Guest House in Koinadhara, Guwahati. The recommendation is now awaiting the final decision of the Central Government.
The Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), which has been in effect for several decades, is being considered for withdrawal due to the significant improvement in the state’s security situation and the subsequent accelerated development.
Currently, this Act is enforced in eight districts of Assam, namely Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong, and Dima Hasao, known as “Disturbed Areas.”
