Assam eyes for Guinness World Records by planting 1 crore saplings on September 17

In a big boost to environmental conservation and foster green growth, Assam is gearing up to achieve nine Guinness World Records as part of an ambitious sapling plantation drive. The Assam government’s initiative, known as the “Amrit Brikshya Andolan,” campaign seeks to plant over 1 crore viable saplings across the state on September 17 with individuals from diverse backgrounds joining hands in this noble mission.

The journey to set these extraordinary records will commence on September 9, with a spectacular “spiral sapling plantation drive” spanning 22 kilometres in Khanapara field, which is expected to feature approximately 3 lakh plants.

“On September 17, around 40 lakh members of women self-help groups from across the State would be planting two viable saplings each, taking the total to 80 lakh. The rest (20 lahks or more) would be planted by people belonging to various walks of life such as Anganwadi workers, tea garden workers, government officials, police and forest battalions and members of the general public of the state,” said Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

“Saplings would be available at distribution centres that would be set up for the purpose. Those who register themselves with the Amrit Brikshya Andolan app/portal and upload geo-tagged photographs of them planting the saplings will be credited with an amount of Rs 100 in their bank account. If the sapling planted on September 17 manages to survive three years, the concerned individual would be paid an additional Rs 200,” CM Sarma added.

Looking ahead, Chief Minister Sarma outlined the state’s ambitious environmental goals. In the coming year, the government aims to plant 3 crore viable saplings, followed by a staggering target of 5 crore saplings in 2025.

According to the Assam government, a total of 9 Guinness World Records will also be attempted as part of the exercise.

  1. Largest spiral of saplings.
  2. The largest number of saplings is distributed in a day at one venue.
  3. Most trees are planted in 1 hour.
  4. Most trees are planted in 24 hours.
  5. Most trees are planted in 1 hour by a team of 100.
  6. Largest planted tree mosaic.
  7. Largest photo album of people planting trees.
  8. Most pledges are taken to plant trees to protect them.
  9. Largest nature conservation lesson online/offline.

The state government has already provisioned 1.39 crore seedlings, and stocking point coordinators have been finalized. The launch of the Amrit Brikshya Andolan web portal/mobile app and the Wood-based Industry (WBI) registration web portal, along with the theme song for the Amrit Brikshya Andolan, marked a significant milestone in the run-up to this monumental event.

Stating that rampant destruction of forests across the world is one of the major contributing factors behind global warming, Chief Minister Sarma exuded confidence collective initiatives such as Amrit Brikshya Andolan would be Assam’s contribution towards the fight against climate change.
