Her mobile phone, slippers and other belongings were found on the Saraighat Bridge over the Brahmaputra in Guwahati this morning
It is being suspected that the lady police personnel posted at the Paltan Bazar Police Station in Guwahati, who had gone missing on Monday night, have committed suicide by jumping off the Saraighat Bridge into the Brahmaputra river in Guwahati.
The lady police personnel identified as Gayatri Hazarika (26) is from Barhampur area in the Nagaon district of Assam.
A member of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) who was part of the search and rescue operation looking for a woman who had allegedly jumped into the Brahmaputra, told the media that after receiving information that a woman had jumped into the Brahmaputra river, a team from the SDRF rushed to the scene and began a search and rescue operation.
The SDRF team has recovered Gayatri’s mobile phone, slippers and spectacles on the Saraighat Bridge this morning, which raised doubts that Gayatri Hazarika may have committed suicide by jumping into the Brahmaputra river.
However, her body or any other trace that she has committed suicide, has not been found yet. A search and rescue operation is still underway.
Meanwhile, the Assam Police has rubbished reports stating that a suicide note has been found and linking Gayatri’s disappearance to her duty at Silsako eviction site.
A press release from the Assam Police said, “It is hereby clarified that no “suicide note” has been found by Police so far. It is also hereby clarified that WPC Gayatri Hazarika was not deputed for Silsako eviction programme as she was exempted by the OC, Paltan Bazar PS.”
The release further said that Gayatri was suffering from “serious health issues and was depressed”.
Giving details of the incident, the release said, “On 04.09.2023 at around 11:45 pm, Constable Juri Baishya of Police Commissionerate, Guwahati informed at Paltan Bazar PS that her roommate WPC Gayatri Hazarika, posted at Paltan Bazar PS, is not contactable since 6 pm on that day. Constable Juri Baishya also informed that WPC Gayatri Hazarika was suffering from serious health issues and was depressed. She left her rented room stating that she was going to Amingaon for some official duty. Later on, neither she was found present at Paltan Bazar PS nor she was contactable over phone. On receipt of this information, Police teams were activated to trace the missing Woman Police Constable.
On 05.09.2023 at around 8 AM, a Police Team of ERSS attached to Jalukbari OP found one mobile phone, one pair of spectacles and one pair of foot wears on the old Saraighat Bridge which were later identified as belonging to WPC Gayatri Hazarika.
Clarifying on Gayatri being put on eviction duty at Silsako, the Assam Police release said, “During Silsako eviction, all Women Police Constables of Police Commissionerate, Guwahati were kept as a Reserved Force for reinforcement in case of emergency requirement. However, the OC, Paltan Bazar PS exempted WPC Gayatri Hazarika from emergency duty seeing her poor health condition”.
Reports said that Hazarika was assigned four days’ duty at the eviction site at Silsako beel (lake) of Guwahati despite she objecting to it. She did not report for duty on any of those days at Silsako beel.
