In a major development in the NIT Silchar violence incident, where a group of students brutally thrashed three cooks on suspicion of mobile theft, the NIT Silchar administration has taken action against all 16 students who were involved in the incident.
The administration has rusticated four students from the institute for a year, and a fine of Rs 10,000 each has been imposed against 12 students.
K.L. Baishnab, Registrar of NIT Silchar, told Northreast Live that they have classified the punishment into two categories: (i) students who were directly involved in the incident have been rusticated from the institute for a year, and (ii) those who were witness to the incident have been fined Rs 10,000 each and have been allowed to continue their classes.
The registrar said that action has been taken to maintain discipline in the campus.
Giving an update on the health condition of the cooks who were thrashed, he said, “We have instructed the outsourcing agency to bear the entire medical expenses until they are physically fit to resume their services.”
Earlier, three security guards were suspended for alleged inaction when the incident took place.
On July 27, a group of students brutally thrashed three cooks on suspicion of mobile theft. The incident occurred at Hostel No. 9 of the Institute and came to light after a video capturing the savage attack went viral on various social media platforms on July 29.
According to reports, a student residing in Hostel No. 4 reported that his mobile phone had gone missing, which led to the suspicion that it might have been stolen.
Subsequently, a section of rogue students took matters into their own hands and rounded up three cooks named Biki Ri, Mona Das, and Rajkumar Dhaushad, who were employed at the hostels. The cooks were then forcibly taken to Hostel No. 9 in a car.
Inside the hostel, the situation escalated into a violent frenzy, with the students subjecting the three cooks to merciless assault, accusing them of theft.
Disturbing video footage had surfaced that revealed the cooks being repeatedly beaten with sticks, kicked, and punched, while two security personnel present at the scene stood idle, not intervening to protect the victims.
