‘One Nation, One Election’ will not drain out economy: Meghalaya minister AL Hek

Reports suggest, the centre is planning to introduce the ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bill in Parliament during the special five-day session starting from September 18-22

With Centre pitching for “One Nation, One Election”, Meghalaya BJP leader and Minister AL Hek has welcomed the central government’s vision, stating that the concept, if implemented, would not have an adverse effect on the nation’s economy.

Speaking to Northeast Live, Hek said that in the current setup, multiple elections are held every year which drains out the economy. However, the vision of “One Nation, One Election” would ensure a better financial stability and enhanced administration.

“That would be very nice. Today in a year we have 2-3 elections, which drains out the economy and wealth of the country. Now we have to spend every year only for conducting elections, like MDC elections, MLA elections, Municipal elections, Panchayat elections, and Lok Sabha elections.”

Reacting to various groups, saying that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s proposal for ‘one nation, one election’ may serve as a vehicle to promote the Hindutva ideology, which seeks to homogenize India under the banner of Hinduism, the state BJP leader and the cabinet Minister said, “We are all Indians. India is built on unity in diversity.”

Hek further alleged some people are sowing the seeds of hatred in society.

The BJP led-government on Friday has set up a committee under the chairmanship of former president Ram Nath Kovind to examine the “One Nation, One Election” system, under which simultaneous elections would be held for the Lok Sabha and state.

Reports suggest, the centre is planning to introduce the ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bill in Parliament during the special five-day session starting from September 18-22.
