In the last assembly elections, the NPP won only 8 seats in the Khasi (2), Ri Bhoi (2), and Jaintia Hills (4) regions

With the Lok Sabha elections scheduled for next year, Meghalaya’s ruling party, NPP, is confident of winning both the seats – Shillong and Tura Lok Sabha seats, Rajya Sabha MP and Meghalaya NPP President WR Kharlukhi told Northeast Live, “We are sure that we are going to win the election.”

Speaking on the NPP’s poor performance in the last assembly elections in Khasi and Jaintia Hills, Kharlukhi said, “This election is not decided by the seat you won, it is decided by the electorate. If you look at the vote poll by the NPP, I think we have every chance to win the election because I think more than 3 lakh votes were polled by the NPP, and we are on first in Khasi and Jaintia hills.”

WR Kharlukhi said that this time they will field their own candidate for the Khasi and Jaintia Hills seats.
In the last assembly elections, the NPP won only 8 seats in the Khasi (2), Ri Bhoi (2), and Jaintia Hills (4) regions.

Some of the prominent NPP leaders who won the last assembly elections are Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Cabinet Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, Thomas Sangma, a former Rajya Sabha member, Timothy Shira (deputy Speaker of the Assembly), Abu Taher Mondol (former Speaker of the Assembly), Ampareen Lyngdoh (health minister) and others.

Reacting to the NGO’s opposing railway project in Meghalaya, Kharlukhi said he would go by his party’s and state government’s decision.
