Arunachal: Solung festival begins at Mariyang in Upper Siang

Solung Festival, the popular agricultural festival of Arunachal’s Adi tribes, began today. The festival lasts for 3–4 days.

During the festival, Kine Nane (the goddess of crops, wealth, and prosperity) is being worshiped for a good harvest. Dadi Bote (the god of animal kingdoms) is also being worshiped for high yield of domestic animals. Other gods, like Doying Bote (the god of wisdom) and Gumin Soyin (the god or protector of households), are worshiped for the well-being of mankind. A traditional folk dance called Ponung Dance, is performed by women folk, is the main entity of celebration, and it lasts for three nights. During the Ponung dance, the Miri Abu (priest) recites the rhapsodies on the origin of the universe and all living things.
