Built at an estimated cost of Rs 420 cr, the bridge is expected to cut down on the travel time from Guwahati city to the Borjhar airport via Maligaon

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday inaugurated the 2.6-kilometre-long Nilachal flyover in Maligaon. The four-lane steel girder flyover built at an estimated cost of Rs 420 crore is the longest flyover of Assam. It is expected to ease the traffic congestion from Maligaon Chariali to Kamakhya Gate.

The flyover is also expected to cut down on the travel time to the Borjhar airport through Guwahati city via Maligaon. The flyover has an extended arm that connects to Pandu Ghat Feeder Road.

The flyover was designed by Assam PWP and built by a joint venture between Shree Gautam Construction Co Ltd and Anupam Nirman Pvt Ltd.

The foundation for the flyover was laid by CM Sarma in October, 2022 and the construction of the flyover was completed in record 36 months.

The flyover features a rainbow arch and a globe at the Tiniali Junction. Moreover, traditional Assamese attire, musical instruments, scenic forests, animals, flora and fauna are also painted beneath the flyover to enhance the aesthetic look of the structure.

Addressing the gathering after inaugurating the flyover, CM Sarma said that the State government is working on war footing to manage the issue of traffic jams on the busy roads of Guwahati and enhance road infrastructure throughout the state. The Chief Minister said that the Assam government will soon come up with as many as 21 flyovers and bridge projects across the state to improve road connectivity and ease traffic congestion.

CM Sarma said that more flyovers would be built across Guwahati.

A 6 km four-lane flyover will be constructed from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) point to Bamunimaidan, two more flyovers will be built in GS Road and Down Town and one flyover each in Dharapur and Bharlumukh. Three more flyovers would be inaugurated in Silchar on September 7, the CM said.

CM Sarma will also inaugurate one flyover in Barpeta, one in Jorhat, one in Dibrugarh and one in Tezpur in the coming days. The Chief Minister further said that a 32 km long elevated corridor will be built in Kaziranga.
