A special court in Tripura’s Khowai district has given a life imprisonment verdict to a 27-year-old man.

The accused Sujit Tanti was found guilty of raping a physically challenged minor multiple times over a three-month period in 2019.

The court found Sujit Tanti guilty under Sections 376 (3), and 506 of IPC and Section 6 of Posco ACT.

This decision came after a long trial that involved listening to the statements of 20 witnesses, examining medical evidence, and reviewing police investigation reports.

According to Additional Public Prosecutor Abhijit Bhattacharjee, the Khowai Police Station received a written complaint against Sujit. He was accused of raping the physically challenged minor girl on several occasions for three months. The police took about eight months to charge him, and the trial itself lasted four years.

The victim’s family learned about the incident when she became pregnant. She later revealed her ordeal to her parents.

In February 2019, the victim’s family registered a case against Sujit.
