Six Australian Palm Cockatoo birds rescued at Assam-Mizoram border

The six Australian Palm Cockatoos were seized from the smugglers near the border with Mizoram from where they were reportedly being smuggled into.
As many as six exotic foreign origin birds were recovered from smugglers at Dholai in Assam’s Cachar district, a police officer said.

Cachar Superintendent of Police, Numal Mahatta, alongwith Additional Superintendent of Police Subrata Sen, visited the Dholai Police Station to oversee the matter. While speaking to media, Additional SP said, “During regular patrolling at the Dholakhal Border Out Post, the police team intercepted a vehicle at around 4 am morning, where a group of individuals engaged in suspected wildlife smuggling.”
“The miscreants fled from the spot abandoning the cages inside the vehicle after noticing the police patrolling team’, Sen added.
He further revealed that the international market price of each Palm Cockatoo is around Rs. 18-20 lakhs, while the total market price of the six recovered cockatoos is over Rs 1 crore.
However, the rescued birds were brought to Dholai police station and the forest department was informed, he said.
The investigation was on to find out who brought the birds to Dholakhal and where the birds were being taken. The matter is being probed thoroughly, Sen said.
