At 9.52%, Manipur records highest inflation among NE states in July; 3rd highest in entire nation

The inflation rates have been released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation

While Manipur is slowly limping back to normalcy after a decline in sporadic incidents of violence, the economy of the state took a hit owing to the unrest that erupted since May 3.

As per data available with the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation the inflation rate in violence affected Manipur in the month of July stands at a staggering 9.52% whereas the national inflation rate is 7.44%.

The inflation rate in Manipur is also the highest in the entire region-

If we look at the national perspective, Manipur comes in the third position in terms of inflation rates-

The inflation rates data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation is based on Consumer Price Index (CPI).

If reports are to be believed the Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based inflation rate in Manipur’s villages surged to 12.32 per cent in May from 5.72 per cent in April. This upward trajectory persisted, with a further rise to 12.98 per cent in June.

The overall inflation rate in the state in June was 10%.

Higly concerned over the state of affairs, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh today chaired a key meeting with the Commissioners and concerned officials of the state government.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh took to Twitter and said, “Discussed a comprehensive overview of the economy of Manipur, highlighting key growth opportunities, challenges and proposed strategies.”

The meeting was attended by Manipur Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi, Manipur University Professor Ch Priyoranjan Singh who specializes in Population Studies and Agricultural Economics), Administrative Secretaries of different departments.

Textiles, agriculture and tourism make up some of the key sectors that constitute a major part of Manipur’s economy. Exports of handwoven textiles, medicines and food items have fallen by nearly 80 per cent, as per reports.
