107 people were killed in May, 30 were killed in June, 15 were killed in July and 4 were killed in August

A total of 152 people were killed in Manipur since the ethnic violence erupted in the state on May 3, said Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Parliament.

Addressing the Lok Sabha during the Monsoon session of Parliament, in New Delhi on Wednesday, HM Amit Shah gave a breakup of the number of people killed along with the number of FIRs filed since violence broke out.

He said that till now, the violence has claimed a total of 152 lives. 107 people were killed in May, 30 were killed in June, 15 were killed in July and 4 were killed in August.

Out of the 107 people killed in May, as many as 68 people were killed on May 3, 4 and 5, HM Shah said.

The Union Home Minister said that so far 14,898 people have been arrested for their involvement in the violence and 1,106 FIRs have been registered since violence erupted in the state.

Nine people have been arrested in connection with the viral video which showed two women paraded naked by a mob at B Phainom village in Kangpokpi district on May 4, but the news came to light on July 19 when the video went viral, HM Shah added.

HM Amit Shah said that he is pained by the incidents of violence in Manipur, but described politics over it as ‘shameful’.

“I agree with the opposition’s claim that there has been excessive violence in Manipur. In fact, we are more hurt than the opposition. Such incidents have happened there that we should be ashamed as a society. However, while the incidents are shameful, doing politics on it is even more shameful”, said Shah.

He once again condemned the inhuman and shameful act (viral video) calling it a ‘blot on society’.

The Union Home Minister in his nearly two-hour intervention, ruled out a change of guard in Manipur saying, “A Chief Minister needs to be changed when he does not cooperate. This CM is cooperating with the Centre”.

He further appealed to both Meitei and Kuki communities to engage in dialogue with the Centre to resolve the issue as violence is not a solution to any problem.

“I assure you that we will bring peace in the state. Politics should not be done on this issue”, Shah said.
