A look at India and Pakistan’s hockey rivalry in numbers

India and Pakistan have faced each other seven times in Olympics, out of which India has won two times, and Pakistan has won four matches.

India defeated Pakistan by 4-0 in their Asian Champions Trophy round-robin match on Wednesday. After this victory, let us look at the rivalry between both sides, in numbers.

Olympics

India and Pakistan have faced each other seven times in Olympics, out of which India has won two times, and Pakistan has won four matches. One match ended in a draw. The first time both nations met on a hockey field was at the 1956 Olympics final in Melbourne and it was the first of many title clashes between two Asian giants, which India won.

Asian Games

Both have played a total of 15 matches at Asian Games against each other in Asian Games, with India winning four, losing eight and one ending in a draw. Pakistan has had an upper hand in the continental event, beating India for the gold in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1974, 1978, 1982 and 1990. India won the gold in 1966 by beating Pakistan.

FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup

In the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup, both teams played five matches, with India winning three, losing two. India also beat Pakistan 2-1 in Malaysia back in 1975 to win the title.

Champions Trophy

At the Champions Trophy, both teams have locked horns 19 times, with India prevailing seven times and Pakistan getting the win 12 times.

Asian Champions Trophy

India has a better record against Pakistan in the Asian Champions Trophy, winning seven out of their 11 matches, losing two and two games ending in a draw. Both teams have met in four finals, with India winning two, losing one and sharing the trophy once.

Asia Cup

In Asia Cup, both teams have played nine matches, with India winning three matches, losing five and drawing one. India had once beat Pakistan in 2003 in the final to win the title. India has lost to Pakistan twice in finals, in 1985 and 1989.

Commonwealth Games

India and Pakistan have played three games against each other at CWG. In three contests that both teams have played, one ended with India winning, the other one went in Pakistan’s favour and the other ended in a draw.

Overall head-to-head results

Overall, both teams have faced each other 179 times across all competitions. Pakistan leads the head-to-head record with 82 wins but India is catching up, winning 65 of their matches. The other 32 matches have ended in a draw.
