Forest (Conservation) Amendment Act not a threat to people of Nagaland: CM Rio

Rio said that Article 371 (A) gives special protection to people of the state regarding land and its resources.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Wednesday said that the Forest (Conservation) Amendment Act 2023 is not a threat to Nagaland’s over 95 per cent forest cover as Article 371 (A) of the Constitution gives special protection to people of the state with regard to the land and its resources.
He said, “We feel that it is not a threat to the state but we will make further study on its implication and we will not make any reacting for now”.
Speaking at an event at North Police Station Kohima, CM Rio stated that hardly 5 per cent of the land and forest cover belongs to the government while more than 95 per cent are owned by individuals or communities of the state.
The Forest (Conservation) Amendment Bill was passed by the Parliament on August 2 and it received the President’s assent on August 4.
On the Naga Peoples Front (NPF) demand for a special session to discuss the issue, Rio said that anyone can raise the issue and it will be discussed.
