Ban on polygamy in Assam: Expert Committee submits report to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

On May 9, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had stated that his government intends to stop polygamy in the state.
Assam is moving closer towards formulating a law to ban polygamy in the state.
The 4-member Expert Committee headed by Justice Rumi Kumari Phukan submitted the report to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma this afternoon.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the information and tweeted, “Today, the Expert Committee, formed to examine the legislative competence of the State Legislature to enact a law to end polygamy in Assam, submitted its report. Assam is now closer of creating a positive ecosystem for women’s empowerment irrespective of caste, creed or religion.”
It may be mentioned that the 4-membr committee was formed to examine whether the state legislature was empowered to prohibit polygamy.
The panel was tasked with holding extensive discussions with all stakeholders, including legal experts, regarding the matter in order to arrive at a well-informed decision.
On May 9, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had stated that his government intends to stop polygamy in the state. Chief Minister Sarma had informed that necessary deliberations would be held with all concerned stakeholders before any decision is arrived at.
The Assam Chief Minister while making the announcement had said, “We want to the stop the trend where a man whether Hindu or Muslim marries 4 women. Assam government has decided to constitute a committee to scrutinize the provisions of The Muslim Personal Law (Shariat) Act, 1937, along with Article 25 of the Constitution of India, in relation to the directive principle of state policy for a uniform civil code.”
