Opposition accuses BJP of exploiting hijab incident to divert focus from core issues
In a recent development, the opposition parties, including TIPRA Motha, Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPIM, and Congress, have strongly criticized the government and the ruling BJP party for an unsettling incident that took place at a school in Bishalghar, located in the Sepahijala district of Tripura.
The incident, which occurred a day ago, involved a distressing altercation surrounding the wearing of hijabs by Muslim girls at the Karaimura Class XII school.
Reports indicate that on Friday, a student belonging to the minority community was subjected to a violent attack by a group of outsiders purportedly affiliated with VHP (Vishva Hindu Parishad) supporters. The attackers were reportedly protesting against the allowance of Muslim girls wearing hijabs into the school.
The victim, identified as Illyas Sarkar, a class X student, was forcibly removed from the school premises and brutally assaulted in front of the institution.
In the aftermath of this incident, opposition parties have united in accusing the BJP of deliberately fomenting such occurrences to divert public attention from pressing issues such as unemployment, inflation, infrastructure, access to basic amenities like clean water, healthcare, and education. The opposition further alleges that the BJP is seeking to exploit these incidents to drive a wedge between different communities and capitalize on the resulting discord.
A peace gathering was convened in Bishalghar, drawing participation from members of both Hindu and Muslim communities. Local administrative officials, law enforcement representatives, and MLA Sushanta Deb were present in the rally.
Addressing the assembly, Deb urged that yesterday’s incident should not repeat and such incidents should be handled strongly as a section is conspiring to spread misinformation and disturb the peace and harmony of the area. The MLA said that earlier in the day he had visited the hospital and inquire about the condition of yesterday’s injured student who is recovering fast.
The situation in Bishalghar is showing signs of gradual improvement, despite the distressing incident. Authorities have registered two police complaints in connection with the incident, although no arrests have been made so far.
