Deputy Commissioners have been entrusted to collect the data from relief camps within their jurisdictions

Mizoram government managed to begin the process of collection of biographic and biometric data from over 35,000 Myanmar refugees taking shelter in the state from Friday.

State home department officials informed Northeast Live that while the collection of biometric and biographic data was scheduled to commence from Thursday, Hnahthial district officials were not yet prepared to fully utilise the website and the pricess have to be deferred for a day.

When asked whether the collection of biometric and biographic data will be undertaken first in the relief camps, the official said that the decision will be taken by the respective Deputy Commissioners within their jurisdictions.

Officials said that the process was delayed due to alteration of the format, prepared by the Ministry of Home Affairs, to suit the Myanmar refugees and may not be able to complete the data collection by the centre’s deadline, which is end of September.

At present, Mizoram hosts 35,126 Myanmar refugees of which 15,589 people are being lodged in 162 relief camps across the state while 19,458 people are living with their relatives and friends or rented houses.

Exodus of displaced people to Mizoram began in March 2021 following the February 1, 2021 military coup after the military launched massive crackdown on anti-coup protestors who formed Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM).
