Manipur: Massive protests in Kangpokpi against reported withdrawal of Assam Rifles from the district

Protestors in large numbers blocked the National Highway-02 in support of their demand

Protests have erupted since midnight in the heart of Kangpokpi town with protestors, mostly womenfolk, protesting against the reported withdrawal of Assam Rifles personnel from a few places in Kangpokpi district.

Northeast Live is trying to ascertain the details and speak to defence sources on the matter.

A large number of protestors also gathered at National Highway number 2, burning tyres and even blocking the highway.

Hundreds of protestors took to the streets, shouting slogans such as “Assam Rifles don’t leave us” and “Assam Rifles we need you”.

A few of the womenfolk were also seen falling at the feet of security personnel, weeping and pleading not to leave them.

Meanwhile, reports of fresh firing have come in from L. Tangnaum village in Kangpokpi in the wee hours this morning. Northeast Live could not independently verify these reports.
