The airport, which ceased operations in 1992, is now set to be revitalized under the UDAN regional connectivity scheme
In an effort to boost air connectivity in the region, Tripura’s Transport and Tourism Minister Sushanta Choudhury led a delegation on a Tuesday and inspected the Kailashahar airport in the northern Unakoti district, which borders Assam and Mizoram.
The airport, which ceased operations in 1992, is now set to be revitalized under the UDAN regional connectivity scheme, following the state government’s request to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation.
The Civil Aviation Authority of India is spearheading the initiative to renovate the abandoned airport, with two airlines, Alliance Air and Big Charter Airlines, expressing interest in operating from the airport. This move is expected to enhance regional connectivity and bolster tourism in the area.
Choudhury, mentioned that Tripura’s second airport in Kailashahar will soon be established, and the central government will provide funds once a Memorandum of Understanding is signed for the land handover.
The visit to Kailashahar also included prominent figures like MLA Brijit Sinha, former MLA Mobashwar Ali, and senior officials from various departments.
A high-level meeting at the Unakoti Circuit House, attended by officials from the Airport Authority of India, further discussed the airport’s redevelopment.
With the renovation and reopening of the airport, the tourism industry is expected to witness significant growth, creating employment opportunities and fostering economic development for both the area and the state as a whole.
