The Minister was on a surprise visit to Hope, the rehab centre situated in Hengrabari area of Guwahati
Assam Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Pijush Hazarika lost his cool when he saw the manner in which a drugs rehabilitation centre was being run in Guwahati. The Minister was on a surprise visit to Hope, the rehab centre situated in Hengrabari area of the city. He got furious after what he saw.
The Centre was violating all rules laid down by the government to run such rehab centres. As per the rules, one patient should be kept in a 50 sqft area. The Centre was dumping at least 4 patients in a 100 sqft area.
The Minister further pointed that the beds being provided to the patients were not proper beds. Benches were being used as beds.
The Minister asked the manager of the Centre why rules were being flouted and why the Centre has failed to comply with the laid down rules.
Expressing his discontent, Minister Hazarika reprimanded the management and said, “I have given two years, but what changes did you bring? You are keeping four patients in a 50 sqft room, and the beds provided are nothing more than benches. Even if you run a charity, you cannot subject people to such injustice. This centre should be immediately shut down.”
The Minister further said that next time licences to open rehab centres would be issued only after verifying all documents.
