Manipur unrest: Congress demands Governor to hold Emergency Session of Manipur Legislative Assembly

The Congress has demanded that an Emergency Session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly be convened for deliberations on the prevailing crisis in the state.

A 5-member delegation led by former Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh met Governor Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhavan in support of the demand.

“The MLAs demanded that under Article 174(1) of the Constitution of India, an emergency session should be convened in the best interests of the people of Manipur to discuss the ongoing crisis,” a tweet by Raj Bhavan Manipur said.

In a letter submitted to the Governor, the Congress said, “We strongly believe that through the Assembly session, sought by us, the people of Manipur will not be kept in dark in bringing peace, harmony and normalcy in Manipur state. In a Parliamentary democracy, which believes in safeguarding and honouring Constitutional propriety, we, unanimously, urge you to kindly summon an emergency session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly to discuss the ongoing turmoil in the state, in the best interests of the people of Manipur to restore normalcy in the state at the earliest.”


The Manipur Congress in a tweet said, “The Congress Legislature Party has urged the Hon’ble Governor of Manipur to convene an emergency session of Manipur Legislative Assembly on the ongoing unprecedented turmoil in the state. BJP’s misgovernance and apathy is destroying Manipur.”

Besides, as per the Governor’s Office, representatives of 10 opposition political parties also met the Governor requesting her to convene a special session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly to discuss the ongoing crisis.
The representatives of the 10 opposition political parties also discussed with the Governor on how to restore peace.
